Choices and requirements for Further and Higher Education and Training, along with Labour Market needs, change constantly, so career planning needs careful consideration for everyone regardless of ambition and potential achievement. The Careers Department offers a friendly service to help all our students look at the course and career options to match their likes, dislikes and current predicted academic abilities.

There is a dedicated careers office and careers library, which is open throughout the year, and holds a supply of local college, school sixth form and university prospectuses along with a selection of apprenticeship and industry information. The department arranges various events within the school, and promotes those events and opportunities taking place outside that may be useful.

Mrs Virginia Martin is Severn Vale's career leader, and she is supported by Mrs Nicky Oakey (Careers Administrator). Students in all years can come to Main Reception during any non-lesson time to ask for a careers appointment to be made, or can ask their tutor to make this arrangement for them. Alternatively, there is a careers request box outside the careers office where students can complete a form and request a careers interview. Professional Advice:

Independent and unbiased careers guidance is provided by Georgie Blackburn, a professional careers advisor, who visits the school once a week during term time to meet with students individually and to give group talks. We try to arrange at least one half hour appointment during KS4 for every single Severn Vale student. Most will receive two meetings, with many more students also receiving individual advice in Year 9.

Assessment of Careers Provision:

Career Mark is a licensed awarding body for the National Quality in Careers Standard; assessing excellence in careers education, information, advice  and guidance (CEIAG) provision, following the changes in relation to the Quality in Careers Standard in March 2017.  Click here for further information. Career Mark uses five standards to assess the Quality in Careers Standard: 

  1. Management - Measures the effectiveness of our systems for planning, managing and integrating CEIAG 
  2. Guidance - Measures the effectiveness of an integrated programme of advice, guidance and support 
  3. Curriculum - Measures how effectively our curriculum supports the development of learners’ knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes 
  4. Information - Measures the accessibility, relevance, importance and effectiveness of information, the acquisition of skills to research and evaluate to be able to make well informed and realistic career decisions.
  5. Learner Outcomes - Evaluates learners’ knowledge, competence and attitudes towards career planning 

Severn Vale was first awarded this award on the 26/6/2016 and the award is re-validated every two years. We achieved re-accreditation in 2018.
