Year 8 Parliament Day
Students in Year 8 enjoyed a day debating about democracy and our Parliament.
60 students from Year 8 were fortunate enough to take part in a day of democracy based workshops delivered by the Parliament Education Service who’d travelled up from Westminster specially to work with them.
The day began with an assembly for the entire year group where a guest speaker from our local MP’s office talked about his role as a researcher for Richard Graham. It was really interesting to hear him talk about the all the work that goes on behind the scenes to help shape and inform our MP’s views.
Throughout the day the students enjoyed a range of workshops looking at the role democracy plays in our lives and the way this has evolved over the years. The timeline of voting rights was particularly eye-opening and the debates on compulsory voting and lowering the voting age both proved to be engaging and heated in equal measure!
A huge thanks and congratulations to all involved.
