Students will either study French or Spanish in Key Stage 3 and complete a variety of topics developing all four language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Our aim is to broaden pupils’ understanding of the world and to develop strong, lifelong linguistic skills.

What is taught and how?

Year 7

Significant time will be spent developing speaking skills and confidence through phonics to ensure that students’ spoken language develops well in role-play and conversational settings.  Students will cover the following topics; Myself and family, School and routines, Opinions and Hobbies,

Year 8

Students will continue to build upon language and skills learned in year 7. Significant time will be spent continuing the development of the spoken language and grammatical knowledge and understanding which will be reinforced through written tasks. Students will cover the following topics; Sport and leisure activities, Food and drink and cultural festivals.

Year 9

Students will complete the following topics developing all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  They will also look at more complex, ‘GCSE’ style questions and indeed the importance of learning Languages for their future. Students will cover the following topics; Holidays and travel, Future plans, Fashion and well being.

GCSE French and Spanish

Students will follow the Edexcel GCSE course and follow Studio and Viva text books. They will complete the following topics developing all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Within this will be translation and roleplay tasks of which all students will have been developing within KS3 however the roleplays will be more formal and the translations will be from a range of contexts from new magazine articles through to 19th and 20th century literary texts. Students will be preparing for their terminal exams which will take place from April through to June.

  • Fortnightly knowledge tests, which will require them to master ‘active’ revision techniques.
  • End of module assessments-usually 3 per year to develop and assess their skills in Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing and Translation.


Homework is set once per week and will usually take up to 30 minutes to complete. Tasks will include developing their revision techniques. This will require the students to make a resource for a revision ‘aide’ and as proof that revision has taken place.

We recommend things like mindmaps/puzzles/flashcards/ revision posters/teaching the content to another person/videoblog etc. Other homeworks could include a grammatical worksheet to complete/written activity using their resources/ research on a cultural aspect of France or Spain.
